Self-Care vs True Nourishment: What Your Body Actually Needs
We hear the words self-care everywhere. People tell you, Take a bath. Light a candle. Book a massage. Have a night off, while these things can absolutely be supportive, many people are still left feeling depleted, overwhelmed, or disconnected. Self-care is so much more than these suggestions which at the least to many sound indulgent, and almost stressful… because where are you going to find the time??
So… let’s look at a very important question:
Is self-care always the same as true nourishment? The answer is… not quite.
What’s The Difference Between Self-Care and Nourishment ?
Self-care, as it’s often presented, can sometimes sit on the surface. It’s the things we do to try and feel better. And at times, it can even become another task on the to-do list—something we feel we should be doing.
True nourishment, on the other hand, goes deeper. It’s not about ticking a box.
It’s about listening. Listening to your body. Listening to your energy. Listening to what you actually need—not what you think you’re supposed to need.
Because what nourishes you will change from day to day, season to season, and moment to moment.
Why Do We Sometimes Miss What We Really Need?
Many of us have become very good at overriding our bodies. We push through fatigue. We ignore tension. We distract ourselves from uncomfortable emotions.
So, when it comes time to “take care” of ourselves, we often choose what looks like self-care… rather than what truly supports us.
For example:
A bath might feel like self-care—but what you really need is sleep.
Time alone might seem right—but what you actually need is connection.
Keeping busy might feel productive—but your body is asking you to slow down.
True nourishment requires honesty. And sometimes, that honesty asks us to pause long enough to feel what’s really going on underneath.
What True Nourishment Can Look Like
Nourishment isn’t always soft or pretty. It isn’t always what we want—but it is what we need. It might look like:
Physical Nourishment
Going to bed earlier instead of pushing through
Eating warm, grounding meals instead of skipping or rushing
Moving your body gently rather than intensely
Emotional Nourishment
Letting yourself feel without fixing or suppressing.
Setting boundaries where you’ve been overextending.
Speaking honestly about what’s been sitting inside.
Energetic Nourishment
Stepping away from noise, screens, or overwhelm
Creating space between you and what drains you.
Receiving support instead of doing everything alone
Mental Nourishment
Slowing your thoughts through breath or meditation
Letting go of constant problem-solving.
Giving yourself permission to not have everything figured out.
The Role of the Nervous System in Nourishing Our Bodies
At the core of true nourishment is your nervous system. When your system is dysregulated—stressed, overwhelmed, or constantly “on”—it becomes much harder to feel what you need, let alone receive it. This is why deeper, body-based support can be so powerful.
Practices like massage, Reiki, and meditation don’t just feel good in the moment—they help your system shift out of survival mode and into a state where healing, clarity, and restoration can actually occur. From this place, it becomes much easier to recognise what is truly nourishing for you.
A Gentle Way to Begin
If you’re not sure what your body needs, start here:
Pause. Take a breath. And ask yourself:
“What would feel genuinely supportive for me right now?”
Not what looks good. Not what you “should” do. But what feels real.
Then, listen—without judgement. The answer might be simple. It might be unfamiliar. It might even feel uncomfortable at first. But this is where true nourishment begins.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Sometimes, reconnecting with what your body needs can feel difficult—especially if you’ve been disconnected from it for a long time.
This is where being supported in a safe, calm space can make all the difference.
Through massage, Reiki, and meditation, I offer a space for you to slow down, soften, and reconnect—so your body can begin to unwind, regulate, and guide you back to what it truly needs.
Self-care is a beautiful starting point. But true nourishment is a deeper remembering.
A remembering that your body already knows what it needs. A remembering that you are allowed to listen. And a remembering that you are worthy of care that truly supports you.
