Do Animals Really Feel Reiki? Understanding Energy Healing Through Your Pet's Eyes

‍ ‍  If you've ever noticed your pet instinctively curl up beside you when you're upset, sensed they somehow know when you've had a difficult day, or watched them quietly seek comfort without saying a word, you've already witnessed just how intuitive animals truly are.

Animals experience the world differently from how we do. While we often rely on words, logic and busy minds, animals live almost entirely in the present moment. They communicate through body language, energy, instinct and emotion. Because of this natural sensitivity, many animals respond beautifully to Reiki.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is: “Do animals actually feel Reiki?"   The simple answer is yes—but perhaps not in the way we imagine.

So, what is Animal Reiki?

Animal Reiki is using the exact same reiki energy that we use for a person in a reiki treatment, it is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that supports an animal's natural ability to restore balance and wellbeing, unlike hands-on therapies, Reiki is always offered with respect for the animal's comfort and choice. Many sessions involve sitting quietly nearby, allowing the animal to decide how close they would like to be. Some pets come right up for connection, while others prefer to receive Reiki from across the room. Both responses are completely normal.

The beautiful thing about Animal Reiki is that nothing is forced. The animal leads the session.

How Do Animals Respond to Reiki?

Every animal is unique, but many owners notice subtle changes during or after a Reiki session.

‍ You may see your pet:

  • Take long, deep sighs

  • Yawn repeatedly

  • Stretch their body

  • Close their eyes and drift into sleep

  • Become noticeably calmer

  • Seek gentle closeness

  • Walk away briefly before returning

  • Relax muscles that have been held tightly

  • Breathe more slowly and deeply

Some animals become deeply relaxed almost immediately, while others simply appear peaceful and content, there is no "right" response, just like people, every animal experiences Reiki in their own way.

Winter Can Be the Perfect Time for Reiki

Winter encourages all of us to slow down, and our pets often do the same. Older animals may feel increased stiffness in their joints. Some pets become less active, while others may experience changes in routine because we spend more time indoors. Winter can also bring emotional challenges. Reduced exercise, fewer outdoor adventures and changes in household routines can sometimes contribute to boredom, anxiety or restlessness.

Reiki offers gentle support during this quieter season by encouraging deep relaxation and helping animals feel safe, calm and settled. While Reiki isn't a replacement for veterinary care, it can beautifully complement your pet's overall wellness plan.

Which Animals Can Receive Reiki?

One of the wonderful things about Reiki is that it isn't limited to dogs and cats, it can be offered to:

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Horses

  • Rabbits

  • Guinea pigs

  • Birds

  • Farm animals

  • Rescue animals

  • Senior pets

  • Animals receiving palliative care

Every species responds differently, yet they all share an incredible ability to recognise calm, peaceful energy.

About The Human-Animal Connection

Something many pet parents don't expect is how peaceful they begin to feel during their animal's Reiki session. Our animals are incredibly attuned to our emotions. They often notice when we're stressed, grieving, anxious or overwhelmed long before we recognise it ourselves.

When we create a calm environment, our pets often respond in kind. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer our animals isn't trying to "fix" them—it is slowing down enough to simply be present with them, then that peaceful presence becomes something you both share.

What Happens During an Animal Reiki Session? What Should You Expect?

Each session begins by allowing your animal time to become comfortable in their surroundings. There is no pressure for them to interact or participate in any particular way. They are free to move, rest, observe or simply relax.

As Reiki is offered, many animals naturally settle into a state of deep relaxation. Some choose to lie down nearby, while others quietly observe before deciding whether they'd like to come closer, sessions are always guided by the animal's comfort, preferences and pace, because every animal is different, no two sessions are ever exactly the same.

Trust In Your Animals Wisdom.

One of the greatest lessons animals teach us is trust, they don't analyse or overthink, they simply respond to what feels safe. whether your companion is young or old, energetic or quiet, healthy or recovering, Reiki provides an opportunity for them to experience stillness, relaxation and gentle support without expectation. Sometimes healing isn't about changing anything, sometimes healing is found in creating a space where your animal feels completely safe to rest.
